Rentwerk started with a simple frustration. As a landlord in Germany, managing even a handful of units meant juggling rent tracking spreadsheets, manually generating utility billing statements, chasing late payments by hand, and dreading the annual tax certificate deadline.

The existing tools were either built for massive property management companies — with complexity and price tags to match — or they were generic accounting tools that knew nothing about German rental law, utility billing regulations, or SEPA direct debit.

There had to be a better way. So we built one.

Germany has some of the most detailed rental regulations in the world. Utility billing alone — the infamous Nebenkostenabrechnung — has strict legal requirements for allocation keys, deadlines, and tenant disclosure.
